“Each of us has the power to be our own medicine man or woman. Awakening our innate powers of being, loving, knowing, seeing and healing involves ongoing work at all levels and in all dimensions of our self.”- Gabrielle Roth
Healing is movement. If you put your body in motion, you will change.
When I began dancing the 5Rhythms in 1994 at Esalen Institute in California, I had no idea what I was getting myself into. I loved movement, I loved dancing with other people, I loved music. I did not know that this practice, these maps to our innermost being would transform me the way they have. This path of healing means taking responsibility for being a whole person: for becoming embodied, for having a feeling heart, for possessing a brilliant and intuitive mind, for awakening our unique soul, for opening ourselves to spirit.
Most of us come to this practice with the wound of fragmentation. Often body, heart, mind, soul and spirit are not in vital unity but somehow disconnected. In my case I knew how to push and control my body, express myself emotionally in a very clearly defined “this is acceptable”-zone and my mind was working overtime trying to make sure I would hit all my marks and set out goals. I felt anxious most of the time, was an overachiever at heart and yet sensed that my soul was crying out to be let free and soar.
Founded by artist and shamanic healer Gabrielle Roth, the 5Rhythms are a form of ecstatic dance that helps us to free our bodies, open our hearts and empty our minds. The 5Rhythms – Flowing, Staccato, Chaos, Lyrical and Stillness – form a wave of energy and map how things naturally move and change. During this movement meditation, each rhythm is a different energy field in which we find our own expression.
The bottom line of this practice is that if we put the psyche in motion, healing happens naturally. I have seen it over and over again in my workshops: veils and masks fall, wounded hearts open, stiff frozen bodies come back to life.
I invite you into this dance journey to reclaim your own medicine man or woman!
